Our android market account was suspended, and we had no ideas why!

[Update] We tried to contact Google, no responses yet.

We sent the following appeal email to Google:

“Dear Google,

Our developer account was suspended today, we have no ideas why. Can you please take a look and let us know? We believe we have not violated any android market policy.

A few of our applications are among the most popular apps in the android market, with a few millions downloads. We really hope this is just a misunderstanding and sincerely hope we can work something out.

Thanks in advanced,

Better Android”

So far we had not received any responses from Google yet. Thank you everyone for your kind supports. Please be patient, we are trying to work something out instead of just distributing our apps through other channels (direct downloads, new developer account, alternative market, etc), not just yet.

============================================================================================

A couple of hours ago, we received a notification email from Google stating that our developer account was suspended. We have no ideas what we did wrong!

Here is the email we received:

“Hello,

Your Android Market developer account has been suspended due to violations of our developer agreement and policies. You may view these terms here:
http://www.android.com/us/developer-distribution-agreement.html
http://www.android.com/market/terms/developer-content-policy.html

As a result, your developer account has been closed and your apps have been unpublished from Android Market. Please note that developer suspensions may span multiple Android Market account registrations. Please do not register a new developer account. We will contact you should your account become reinstated.

Regards,

The Android Market Team”

As you can see, there really isn’t any info about why the account was suspended. We will try our best to contact Google to find out what’s going on. We did some research on the Internet, and we found many horror stories (such as this, this and this) about Google’s lack of responses to developers after their accounts were suspended. We hope we will get some responses from Google, but our expectation is very low.

We are a small group of developers who have been developing apps for android since the very first release of android. As our name suggested, our mission is to improve the android platform by developing useful apps for it. We hope we can work something out with Google or at least find out why our account was suspended. In the mean time, please be patient with us and we will sure support our users no matter what.

If you want to help us out, please use the following form to ask Google market to look into this case and your apps. Thank you for your supports.

    What the hell?! That’s terrible!

I guess I’m glad I finished reinstalling all my important apps (including Better Keyboard) after a device wipe and reinstall a few hours ago instead but that’s really ridiculous. It’d be nice if Google would say which specific rule they think you violated.

    Good luck with this. :(

    • #2 by fluffy on August 4, 2011 - 7:29 pm

So here is what’s happened so far:

      1. I sent the following to Google through that contact form:

      AutoDetectedBrowser: Google Chrome 12
      AutoDetectedOS: Linux
Description: Where did Better Keyboard go? This was my favorite keyboard

replacement, and I paid for the upgraded version.
      IIILanguage: en
      IssueType: market_website
      Language: en
      android_app_name: Better Keyboard
      android_os: gingerbread
      android_os_other:
      device_manufacturer: htc
      device_manufacturer_other:
      hidden_country: US
      website_issue_select: other

      2. They responded with this completely clueless response:

      Hi there,

Thank you for your email and the opportunity to assist you. I apologize
that you lost a favorite app. I was able to review your download history,
however, I wasn’t able to locate the mentioned app in your information. I
could locate it easier if I knew the exact name; there are several like
      the one you listed.

Please be aware that app developers can choose to limit the availability
of their apps in several ways, including by geographic location, screen
size, Android OS as well as other device-specific features.

You may find developers’ contact information here:

      1. Go to Android Market and select the app in question.
      2. On the app’s description page, scroll down to the ‘Developer’ section
      3. One of the following contact options will be provided: an email
address, a phone number, or a website.

Please let me know if you have further questions I can help you with. Have
      a great day.

      Regards,

      Stephanie
      The Android Market Team

      3. I replied with the following:

I was actually writing due to this blog entry:

      http://betterandroid.wordpress.com/2011/08/04/our-android-market-account-was-suspended-and-we-had-no-ideas-why/

They make top-notch keyboard and home screen replacements, including Better Keyboard (which I rely on as it’s by far the best keyboard I’ve used for Android), and it’s a complete mystery as to why their developer account was suspended and their applications delisted.

Better Keyboard comes in two parts: Better Keyboard 8 (Gingerbread) and Better Keyboard Unlock Key, which provides upgraded functionality (and is the paid-for component).

Obviously, as their applications have been delisted from Android Market, finding the full application information in that way does not work, and even if it did, it does no good to ask them why they were delisted from the Android Market when they’re the ones asking that question to begin with.

I’ll keep you posted as to what I hear next.

      • #3 by fluffy on August 4, 2011 - 10:16 pm

        — Their response: —

        Hello,

Thanks for writing in. It looks like the application you referred to is no
longer available on Android Market due to violations of our Terms of
Service. You may view those terms here:

        http://www.android.com/us/developer-distribution-agreement.html

        http://www.android.com/market/terms/developer-content-policy.html

If you’d like additional details, we recommend you contact the developer
        directly.

If I can assist you further, please let me know. Have a nice day.

        Regards,

        Stephanie
        The Android Market Team

        — My response to that: —

If you read that article I linked to, the developer has no idea why they were suspended. It would be helpful for everyone involved if you could point out to them what term they actually violated, and how they can be reinstated. This sort of shoddy approach to developer and customer relations sours me significantly on my respect for Google.

      • #4 by fluffy on August 5, 2011 - 1:33 am

I added the following, in light of the “Better Android Apps” thing:

It looks as if there may have been some confusion on Google’s end regarding the company you were suspending. Better Android is a legitimate company that only produces legitimate applications. It looks as if you had intended to suspend “Better Android Apps,” which makes a bunch of abusive, clearly-TOS-violating piles of crapware.

The thing is that Better Android has been around for quite some time and has nothing but legitimate (and high-quality) applications, and it’s very unfair of you to suspend them just because some scammers misappropriated their name. It makes me worry that any developer might come under fire because someone else registers as a developer under a similar name, and that further erodes my faith in the Google ecosystem.

It’s perhaps a bit ironic that the other reason I am currently VERY UPSET with Google is over the “real name” policy on Google+ – one hand of the company cares far too much about keeping names straight, while another one does not.

All I can say is that Google as a whole has become quite “kafka-esque,” to put it mildly.

      Here is what I sent:

(better keyboard selected as the App in question)

I recently formatted my phone and was reinstalling the apps. I noticed that I could not find an app that I paid for. Going to the developer’s website I saw that you suspended their development license.

I understand that you have some reason to remove their development license, but please tell them and others what that reason is so that they can get this resolved and I can download an app that I have paid for.

I have never had a problem with any of their software and it is obvious from the plea on their homepage that if they did violate some policy, they were unaware they were doing it.

      Loyal Google Fan,

I sent Google a message asking why your program was pulled. I hope you get this resolved soon. I will be glade to help you. Keep me informed and I will send you the response I get.

  6. #11 by Steve on August 4, 2011 - 7:20 am

Here is the email i sent google….

Why was Better Android suspended and removed from the market? I went on tonight to order a second license from them for my girlfriends phone to give her a full version of his better keyboard 8, only to find i can’t. Well thanks a lot because she is pregnant and this little thing set her off and now I wont get any sleep tonight.

Bring back this developer and his apps!!!!

Great! I just did a full wipe, and now I have to use the HTC stock keyboard. It feels so weird.

  11. #16 by Tyler on August 4, 2011 - 6:22 pm

I flashed my phone last night and didn’t try to install Better Keyboard until today. I thought Google was a good company…

  12. #17 by Lynn on August 4, 2011 - 6:31 pm

I accidentally uninstalled better keyboard 8 early this morning, and as soon as I realized my sleepy-headed mistake, I went into the market and couldn’t find it. I could find other apps by you guys so I thought it was a mistake. I soft reset my phone to see if that would help, but obviously we know it didn’t. I’m terribly upset, and I did send a note to google about this. You guys make the best apps out there! (The keyboard being my favorite) And now I have to use a crappy app called “perfect keyboard”…perfect my @$$!!!! It SUCKS!!!! I want my keyboard back :( I hope they fix this for you guys soon. (Stupid friggin google crap) >.<

  13. #18 by Dale Ray Cruz on August 4, 2011 - 7:02 pm

Sent them an email and let them know that my Captivate was replaced via repair and paid for a keyboard I thought was Better Keyboard. The keyboard I thought was yours is called (EvenBetter)NumberPad Keyboard I didn’t like it! So I’m stuck with the android keyboard! Email address is pistolbar@att.net

  14. #19 by Dag Notland on August 4, 2011 - 10:09 pm

I have bought the Better Keyboard from you guys, so I used that as an excuse to demand an explanation for that they have done…

nothing much I can do except that, lets see if I get an answer anytime soonish..

  15. #20 by Gladys Devant on August 4, 2011 - 10:17 pm

Why oh why was this developers apps pulled? What did they violate? They have the best keyboard out there! Google you are not nice at all! I filled out the form to let them know that we want it back!

  16. #21 by punyweakling on August 4, 2011 - 11:09 pm

Hi guys, this seriously sucks. Long time supporter of yours – I filled out the form this morning and sent Google+ messages to several Android people and Developer Advocates on G+

    Hope they resolve this ASAP!!!

It’s just Google being evil again.

    F’n company :(

I used to be a fan of Google and now I’m definitely gonna switch to something else. I’m sick of them.

How about for multiple trademark infringement.

  19. #24 by cdsmith on August 4, 2011 - 11:51 pm

So, in case you’re being honest that you have no idea why your account was suspended (hard to believe…), maybe it has something to do with uploading an app called “Netflix”, and setting its icon to the official Netflix logo. And then the same thing for a dozen other well-known brand names: Staples, Lowes, Applebee’s, Yahoo!, … and that’s not even including all the still clearly infringing misuse of trademarked logos for others where you didn’t *exactly* copy the name verbatim: Disney, Facebook, MSN, …

Yeah, I’m sure you just have no idea why your account was suspended…

    • #25 by betterandroid on August 5, 2011 - 12:41 am

Guys, the developer in the provided link is not us, not AT ALL. They are ‘Better Android Apps”, we are simply registered as “Better Android”.

      • #26 by Little Droid on August 5, 2011 - 6:01 pm

Http://goo.gl/SNAca is you, and has Disney, Sponge Bob, Hello Kitty, South Park, Mario and other branded stuff. Are you claiming you have licensed all those?

      • #27 by betterandroid on August 5, 2011 - 6:21 pm

Those themes were developed by some of our users in the very early days of android. There were unpublished long ago due to copyright complains. They are still listed in androlib because androlib only scrapes new apps but they don’t seem to remove the unpublished apps. That’s why you still see ‘Better Android’ there even when our developer had been suspended.

      • #28 by Little Droid on August 5, 2011 - 7:16 pm

Disney icon pack was available in market as recent as may 2011, “glasklart” icon pack (includes apple logo) as recent as July 2011, Xbox icon pack July 2011, mario icon pack July 2011, etc. You can find these dates on Android zoom.com
Maybe Google just got fed up with your repeated copyright violations.

      • #29 by betterandroid on August 5, 2011 - 8:07 pm

The date you listed is probably the last time they scrape the android market for data. Those themes were not published on 2011. We can understand Google may decide to pull an app due to copyright issues, we have a couple of themes that were suspended because of that. However, Google should not suspend the developer account all together.

  20. #30 by Patrick Davis on August 5, 2011 - 12:11 am

OK, here is the reason why:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/j99h0/google_suspends_android_market_account_of_better/?already_submitted=true

Apparently these guys have been putting trademarked logo’s on some of their apps. Netflix, facebook, you name it. I would have thought better of these guys. Better Keyboard is such a great app. I wrote a letter to Google on your behalf, now I find out you make a bunch of shit apps that try to trick people into downloading them?

    Fuck you Better Apps

    • #31 by punyweakling on August 5, 2011 - 12:47 am

      Read the response above.

“Better Android” != “Better Android Apps”

      • #32 by Patrick on August 5, 2011 - 2:17 pm

Yep, I jumped the gun a little (oops!). I retract my statement above in its entirety. I appologize Better Android :(

I would also like to say, I am glad that they did not censor the comment above. It says a lot to approve the comment even though it totally bashes the company.

Good luck getting your developer license back!

  21. #33 by Ian on August 5, 2011 - 12:46 am

These idiots decided to make knockoff versions of popular apps or created apps that misled people into thinking they were dealing with an official app. Now they play coy because they have a bunch of angry customers who paid for a mediocre keyboard. Better Android screwed up, maybe you guys should try out SwiftKey or Swype; at least those firms aren’t crooks.

    • #34 by Ian on August 5, 2011 - 12:52 am

Wow, my apologies. Looks like I’ve made the same mistake google made.

  22. #35 by buhesap on August 5, 2011 - 1:20 am

This is same old google. Good luck for getting a proper explanation.

  23. #36 by Mark D. MacLachlan on August 5, 2011 - 7:19 am

OK, as a purchaser of BetterCut, I’d like to know if you have any other download mechanism for your paid customers. I don’t mind selecting Unknown Sources to get it to install again.

  24. #37 by Benjamin Cross on August 5, 2011 - 8:54 am

Clearly I am not the only one who reinstalled their device only to find out they are stuck with a stock keyboard :-(
Is there anyways paying customers can request apk files directly until this is all sorted out?
Hope google comes to there senses

  25. #38 by Rio on August 5, 2011 - 9:15 am

    Standard reply;
    Hi,

Thanks for writing in. It looks like the application you referred to is no longer available on Android Market due to violations of our Terms of Service. You may view those terms here:

    http://www.android.com/us/developer-distribution-agreement.html http://www.android.com/market/terms/developer-content-policy.html

If you’d like additional details, we recommend you contact the developer directly.

    Email:

    betterandroid@gmail.com

  26. #39 by Robin on August 5, 2011 - 6:20 pm

    Hey!

I have no idea what exactly happened here, but something similar happened to a game I put on the market. They didn’t suspend my account but just the game itself. It turned out that the reason was that I used “alternative payment providers” outside the google market (specifically PayPal) to allow people to unlock additional content. That seems not to be ok.

If you have any contacts to guys within Google, mail them about it! That’s what I did and I got everything resolved in 2 days (they asked me to upload an update without the offending parts). The rather anonymous Google Market support team wasn’t of much help at first, but after a while (after someone in Goog started the de-suspension process, I guess), they were more accommodating and accepted my appeal, and allowed me to reinstate the game.

Hope that helps, at least a bit!
    Robin

  27. #40 by James on August 5, 2011 - 8:03 pm

I just thought I might throw this idea in: the place you guys are emailing isn’t Google developer support. The email contact form that is on the website (http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/request.py?contact_type=contact_policy&policy=apps) is strictly for end users, for the average Joe that can’t download due to an error or that kind of thing. I think it’d be a good idea to try their developer page (I’m not a developer, so I’ve never used it) over here:
    http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/developer/bin/answer.py?answer=136601&hl=en

As a user, I’ve never had any issues whatsoever with Google’s support, but it looks like the Developer side of things are a little… shaky. Sorry your app got suspended, but I am happy that I got my Better Keyboard before it was removed. :)

  28. #41 by The Professor (@GuamGuy) on August 6, 2011 - 1:45 am

My other thoughts on this issue is to try to start a new Market account again. This time with new names that is distinctive and not sounding generic that it can be mistaken with someone else. I would carefully avoid names that have been trademarked, e.g. “Droid” either with your Market account name or your product name.

  29. #42 by Lynn on August 6, 2011 - 4:52 am

Seriously Google? Wth? You take an honest developer and punish them for the wrong doings of another dev? Oh, this NEEDS to be fixed by them… PRONTO >.<

  30. #43 by Tiberius on August 6, 2011 - 11:18 am

This is terrible. Mostly because of any lack of explanation, just some links to generic catch all reasons that they can use. But, what happens to us, the people that paid for the apps, we are also screwed. You make a legit app, we buy it. I say, hit up Amazon’s App Market…see if they will host you just to stick it to Google.

  31. #44 by preciouscebuana on August 6, 2011 - 2:48 pm

I am hoping I would have my keyboard back so I hope this will be fixed soon because I really want to redownload it. I am so used to the keyboard that I cannot think of using any other.

    • #45 by James on August 6, 2011 - 6:18 pm

Has ANYBODY even asked the dev for a refund, yet? At least a refund until they clear their issues with Google and their app is put back on the market?

      • #46 by fluffy on August 7, 2011 - 4:07 pm

Why would we do that? We want our keyboard back, not to punish the ones who made it.

      • #47 by Lynn on August 7, 2011 - 7:13 pm

It’s not the dev’s fault stupid! And this will all be figured out soon, and if not the dev has already BASICALLY said that they will put it on another market for us to retrieve if this issue cannot be fixed. But I honestly believe that it will be fixed. So please, if you’re waiting for this issue to be resolved, chill…And if you’re not even one of their supporters and you just found this by mistake, shut up and go educate yourself someplace. Thanks.

  32. #48 by Keith Smith on August 6, 2011 - 6:09 pm

I’m seriously annoyed. I just got my new Photon and have been trying to download Better Keyboard (the first Android app I always install) and was shocked to hear that your account has been suspended. Here is the note I sent them:

The ONLY reason I use Android is because I can use “Better Keyboard” which is easily 10x better than the default keyboard and Swype. Now Google has suspended Better Keyboard’s developer account.

GET THEM BACK NOW. I’m ready to go back to iPhone if I can’t get BETTER KEYBOARD. My Android is unusable without it!

  33. #49 by deaconblade on August 6, 2011 - 11:11 pm

damn so that’s what happened to BetterCut .. this is really scary that Google can pull anything regardless of if we’ve paid for it or not.

  34. #50 by sicRage (@xsicRagex) on August 7, 2011 - 12:07 am

Joining the cause.. just sent this email to google..

“I recently had to reinstall my apps due to a phone replacement. When I went to install my keyboard and home replacement apps they were no longer listed in the market. I visited the developer’s (Better Android) blog and it appears their account has been suspended for what many of us believe to be a mistake in the developer’s identity. There is another developer who is not affiliated with Better Android that goes buy the name of Better Android Apps, which has put out some questionable apps. As previously stated Better Android is a great developer with many top apps which do not seem to violate any of the android market TOS per my review of their apps and the terms. While this Better Android Apps developer clearly violates many of the TOS. I am hoping this issue can be resolved quickly as many of the apps I have paid for are no longer available and this mix up is causing a great amount of loss to an outstanding developer. Thank you for your time.”

    • #51 by sicRage (@xsicRagex) on August 7, 2011 - 12:51 am

      Response from google:

      “Hi there,

Thanks for letting us know about this issue. We appreciate all the
feedback we get from our users. I’ll be sure to share your input with the
rest of the Android Market team.

      Regards,

      Ashlie
      The Android Market Team”

  35. #52 by feezy on August 7, 2011 - 3:29 am

This sucks. I paid for better keyboard and now since i had to reboot my phone, it’s gone, but all the skins are still downloadable. if i would’ve known this was gonna happen, i probably wouldn’t have ever rebooted my phone. please bring better keyboard back asap! I can’t live without it.

  36. #53 by dxintel on August 7, 2011 - 6:30 am

Can you publish your keyboard to SLIDEme market? I seen this happen before with NESoid.

  37. #54 by SenzaFatica on August 7, 2011 - 11:14 am

Better Android isn’t Better Android Apps, reading the comments I get it, but the name of your blog “Better Android Apps” contributes to the confusion.

  38. #55 by Samuel Marano Jr on August 7, 2011 - 12:41 pm

I did a full wipe last night because of some weird file system issue I’m having (which still isn’t fixed) and found BK8 to be gone. I can’t seem to pull the apk from my g/f’s samsung so I scoured the internet for it till I found it. I’ll be honest with ya though, the one I have came with an “unlocker” app that I will not use because I didn’t pay for it to begin with AND who knows wtf that really does. Just throwin that out there. If you bing better keyboard 8 apk it’s like the 2nd or 3rd site ;-) Later guys, hope this gets sorted out quickly.

  39. #56 by Jay on August 7, 2011 - 12:50 pm

I wrote Google an Email on your behalf. Not happy about this, i have used Better Keyboard for almost 2 years and now I have to use some “joke” of a keyboard??? Good luck and for EVERYBODY’S sake this gets fixed!!!

  40. #57 by Kijutsu on August 7, 2011 - 1:12 pm

This is the only keyboard I’ve found that has functioning arrow keys for use under Linux on ConnectBot. I loved this keyboard — I hope Google pulls their head from their ass and fixes this issues 3 days ago.

  41. #58 by Vince on August 7, 2011 - 6:25 pm

There is no way to get apps through another source or a direct download to sd card? I was wondering can we get a refund for the apps we purchased? This needs to be resolved we just got ripped off.

  42. #59 by terwax on August 7, 2011 - 10:20 pm

I hope they commensate them as well for loss of customers. I just got my EVO 3d yesterday and can’t stand the default keyboard. It was clearly Google’s mistake and hope they don’t do it again.

    Peace

I just emailed Google supporting you guys as well. I am seriously considering going to apple products now because of their bullying of Better Android.

Insane! Especially without them explaining the reasons to you.

@terwax. I just got my EVO 3d yesterday and can’t stand the default keyboard. It was clearly Google’s mistake and hope they don’t do it again.

    - What EVO 3D you have ?

@All please commit to Android developer with subject?

They have a duty to spell out the reasons for *any* suspension and to promptly address any concerns about mistakes. I wrote to them and got a thoughtless, canned response back. Hopefully, more messages will help get the point across.

Hi there, i’ve emailed them saturday, and just got a canned answer from Google Ireland (In french… don’t want to know how the hell they knew I was french… since I never said it, or refered to it. Still it’s mainly the same answer as in English : Bla bla violates ToS bla bla contact developers blah).

And I just answered back… more angrily this time. Hoping to see them moving on this issue.

    Thanks for your great app.

It may be worth writing back if you get a canned reply the first time. After I pointed out the thoughtlessness of their first reply, they wrote back with the following:

    ————————
“Thanks for letting us know about this concern with BetterAndroid. I do
understand that users are upset about this issue. We are currently investigating this issue. I’ll be sure to share your input and concern with the rest of the Android Market team. If you have any other questions regarding the Android Market, let me know. Have a great day.”
    ————————

That’s a little better, but still not an answer.

When you write, be sure to press them to change the policy to give more explanation on future account suspensions. If they simply reverse this one but keep doing the same thing to others, it’s going to be a losing battle for everyone. They need to tell people why they are suspending an account, and they need to have a fast and fair process for reviewing claims when people believe they were suspended in error. Treating developers’ work as disposable is not cool.

I sent 2 emails to google. The first one was a generic email pointing to their distribution agreement and content policy. The second email was not helpful at all.

    Android Apps Support to me

    Hi ,

Thanks for writing in. At this moment, for security reasons we will be
unable to share the exact reason for the account suspension.

As mentioned before, the application you referred to is no longer
available on Android Market due to violations of our Terms of Service.

If I can assist you further, please let me know.

    Regards,

    The Android Market Team

Wow they suck.I think that is crap.I tried to write Google and they said I would have to contact the developer as to why they closed the account. This is also bull, because I know for a fact there is a application in the market right now that is violant(dog-fighting).According to Google’s policy, this is a violation, but yet, it is still on the market.

Please see below the message I have just sent to Google.

What the hell is going on with Better Keyboard (developed by Better Android apps), they have not been told why there apps have been taken off the market (saying they have breached terms and conditions, is not an acceptable answer) and because of your un-communiated actions have not only made the developers suffer but your customers have suffered the most. I have been a user of Google’s products and services for a long time and do not appreciate how badly you treat your customers. I want an email back with a detailed explanation on your actions, and how you will be working with the developers to get the problem sorted.
Let me remind you that violating the terms and conditions is now an acceptable answer, i want detailed information from Google, as you have not found it necessary to get detailed information to the developer, which i think is diabolical.
    Thanks in Advance, Dean Cummings

I sent another email, and even a message to one of the Googlers in Google+. Adding my voice to the chorus.
